ABOUT THE CUP & ANNA RIESS:
For this special edition, we are delighted to work with Anna Riess, an artist living and working in Vienna. Anna's creations are made in her small studio in the second district.
After briefly studying architecture, followed by a Masters in Cultural Anthropology in 2012, Anna began to focus on her true joy of creating with her hands. Through a three-year course in contemporary jewelry design, Anna was able to playfully express her critique of society through the creation of objects in close relation to the human body.
As the mother of a daughter, Anna has a strong desire to explore the female body as a subject of creative investigation and inspiration, and to represent the experience of being a woman and mother in these times through her creations and hand-shaped objects. She sculpts breasts as plant and flower pots, forming drinking vessels with nipples to drink from. Anna's celebration of the erotic female form highlights the importance of supporting and loving your mother, sister and friend.
Each piece is hand sculpted from clay in her studio, fired and then glazed. Anna has always loved the feel of earth materials in her hands, and the slow sculpting, molding and shaping is a meditative and grounding practice for her.
In addition to clay and textile objects, Anna loves to expand the possibilities of shapes and materials in jewelry making. Anna is most interested in working with repurposed silver and imperfect beads as ingredients, which she combines in endless variations. They can be worn to strengthen and emphasize the identity of women and men.
